The physical map of the world often affect the climate and in turn the lives of the people significantly. That is why a study of the physical map of the world is very important. If there are tall mountains, the people of that area would be those who can weather the extreme climates and climb up steep inclines without much difficulty. In fact, as evolution would have it, the physical features of the people of those areas become adapted to the climate and terrain.

Similarly, the dress of the people living in deserts are typical. It is designed to ward off the harsh climate. Even what they eat and their lifestyle is governed by the physical elements present in the part of the world they inhabit.

So a study of the major mountain ranges and deserts would be very important.

Similarly, you would notice that plenty many cities develop on the coast-line or along rivers. This is because, cheaply available water is a very important ingredient in human lives and rivers provide that easily. Besides they provide transportation. Also cities on the coastline develop into ports from where goods are imported and exported. And without international trade, no country can maintain their standard of living because we have become used to consuming goods produced in other countries.

So, we need to study the major seas, rivers, gulfs and peninsulas and the cities that are around them. These physical features on the surface of the earth are immensely important for us to have a clear grasp of the different countries of the world.

The countries of the world are the units of this world map which we must know so that the physical world map can be understood in this context. For example, if you are told that on the world map, the longest mountain range is called the Andes mountains, a natural question is where is it located. If you are told that it is in South America, even then you need to further know how to get there. So the country on which a particular physical feature lies becomes very significant. Andes lies mostly in the country of Chile which stands longitudinally alongside the western coast of South America.

Thus we can conclude that in order to appreciate the positions of the physical features on our world map, we would be well advised to learn the position of the countries first. There are 193 countries on the World Map. It is called the Political Map as against the Physical Map of the World. 193 does seem to be a large number and ordinarily not amenable to memorizing, one would think. But there is a possibility of learning them very easily if we take a few of them and use memory aids to remember them.

But then how would you memorize the position of each and every country of the world without forgetting which came before which. This can be done only if the complicated looking World Map is simplified in some way.
